almost speechless (certainly aghast) Wednesday

  • "Stein says that as mayor, Palin continued to inject religious beliefs into her policy at times. "She asked the library how she could go about banning books," he says, because some voters thought they had inappropriate language in them. "The librarian was aghast." That woman, Mary Ellen Baker, couldn't be reached for comment, but news reports from the time show that Palin had threatened to fire Baker for not giving "full support" to the mayor."
From the Time magazine, dated 9.2.08.

... And then go and visit Susan Higganbotham at Reading, Ranting, and Writing by a Historical Fiction Writer, who has posted an excerpt from the New York Times that amplifies the frightfulness of this choice by the clueless and dangerous Republican Party.

No kidding, people. As scary as this election process has been, it's getting downright terrifying.

Not all Republicans are crazy. They just keep driving out all the sane people and letting the crazy ones run for higher office. I don't like that woman at all. Those two would be quite a pair in the White House. I really didn't think it could get any worse...

Absolutely terrifying. Do the Repub's not see the danger in this?

Grrrrr.. That's shocking.. and terrifying.. and.. and.. I HOPE OBAMA WINS.

Doubt they see the danger. They only see opportunity. What I'm angered by is that, apparently, they think no one will see her nomination as a cheap gimmick.

I learned all I needed to know about this woman when I heard an excerpt from her inaugural address to Alaskans on NPR. I live in the bible belt and even I was shocked by how many times she bandied about God's name. You would have thought she built an ark and saved mankind by being elected. Separation people. I think politicians have co-opted God as if he/she is nothing more than a marketing ploy. Ugh.

And banning books? Do people like this still really exist? Double ugh.

Did you hear her speech tonight? And Rudy's? Scary. Classless. Insulting and condescending. Banning books as well? Great. I just can't believe it - it's truly terrifying...

Adrienne: I read a blurb and thought "Delusions, anyone?" C'mon.. (Tongue FIRMLY in cheek, here)if you're not going to blame global warming on pollution, let's blame it on the liberals! Oh, and let's start telling the press what to say because they just might say something mean, and we CAN'T have that, no, no, no. And while we're at it, let's start arresting people for any potentially deviant behavior, like enjoying trips to the library or eating broccoli. Oh, and one more thing, let's just close all the libraries to make sure people no longer have access to smutty books.

Zounds... I swear.. it's really, really scary.

I only heard part of her speech this morning and it was more than a little disturbing. I think they need to keep a tight leash on her because she is a self proclaimed maverick and they might not like the directions she runs in. I found her irritating and loved Madeline Albright's take on her.

I have been terror-stricken since she compared herself to Hillary and Geraldine.
She doesn't begin to hold a candle to them.
I'll go read the NY Times article

Great! How many book burning do we have to continue to live through before the world really “Gets” that whole “Freedom of Speech” part in our constitution!
Honestly as a country we are literally moving backwards.
I think everyone in a America needs to take a history class and remember why our fore fathers wanted everyone to have the freedoms.
I really hope Obama wins or it won't be long before we are all in the dark ages again!~

Teabird: I'm watching McCain's speech and my heart is sinking. I went to your blog hoping you'd be writing about this horrible future that I fear is before us. I'm taking some comfort in the commenters but I can't face another 4 years or more of this. Could Americans really vote for these dangerous fools? What can we do?

Terrifying is the word.

You might be interested to see what UK journalist/novelist Linda Grant had to say on the subject in the Guardian (the only UK paper that is even remotely to the left of centre):

Some of the most unpleasant comments she received (which may have been deleted by now) just served to underline the points she made in the article.
