plain Kate

You are called plain Kate,
And bonny Kate and sometimes Kate the curst;
But Kate, the prettiest Kate in Christendom
Kate of Kate Hall, my super-dainty Kate,
For dainties are all Kates, and therefore, Kate,
Take this of me, Kate of my consolation.
  The Taming of the Shrew, 2. 1

kateKates don't get much more plain than this. Curst? I'll let you know. I'm about to try plying for the first time, since I've now got two bobbins' worth of the lovely Louet Northern Lights spun up. I have ordered a Lazy Kate, but it has not arrived, so I decided to improvise.

(Doesn't my Bee have a built-in Kate? you ask. Well yes, but I lost it...Don't even ask how one loses something that is built-in. Please.)

If that kate isnt smooth enough, you can do what I do. I use a large metal strainer, you know the kind in the pasta pots. Put the bobbins in that with long skinny knitting needles and it works just great!! Can't wait to see that plyed, I know it will be just stunning!!

My daughter is a Kate and she laughingly resents it being called a lazy kate. We have to call it a bobbin holder around here.

But, but. . . Asking how you could lose something built-in was going to be my entire comment. . .

mr not-squeaky's kate is not to be plyed with, if i want to keep my sanity. my favourite plying box is a usps box (from you i believe) and some straights (b/c i never use them anyway) and some string for tension. oh and a weight in the bottom.

good luck plying! the singles look awesome!

The northern lights looks lovely! I hope the plying goes well. If the bobbins are too "spinny" as you try to ply then see if you can add rubber bands for a slight bit of tension. I definitely ply better with tension on my bobbins.

Have fun plying! I actually really like plying, as it's fun to see the color of the singles combine into whatever colored yarn they end up becoming. It can be quite the surprise to see the end result. (Or at least, it can for me. More experienced spinners may laugh at this, I'm not sure.)

Now I really want a wheel so that I can call her Kate the Curst.

Love that yarn you're spinning. Lovely stuff. I just ordered a Spinolution lazy kate for my Mach ii. I haven't gotten it yet though. I CAN understand how you'd lose a built in lazy kate. Unfortunately, I DO understand. Ha! I lose stuff all the time.

I love your reference to Taming of the Shrew. My daughter played a minor part in that play once and I really enjoyed it!
