I decided to try the Grumperina method of picking up stitches and - my gusset is a thing of beauty. It's even, there are no holes, and I am growing in sock-knitting confidence with every stitch. I was, indeed, born to knit socks. I'll post pictures in a day or two, when I'm closer to the toe.
And ... I finished Harry tonight. (Hornbill agreed to let me read it first.) So many questions answered...

Congrats on the gusset - I think that is the hardest part of sock knitting for sure.
I finally opened my copy of HP the last. I forced myself to wait until I had finished my re-read of all the others. I wanted to refresh my memory so I wouldn't miss any clues along the way!
oh good work Melanie. Born to knit socks huh? tee hee. I remember how you struggled.
I must look up the grumperina method. Have been having gusset issues of my own of late.
Oh great you finished! We must discuss!
I'm so glad you are getting more comfortable with socks. I really think they are a satisfying project.
I'm primed to start HP tomorrow night ...
Yes, but I'm wondering whether the questions were answered to your satisfaction?
Congrats! Another born sock-knitter! (knew it all along, of course!) *wink*
