People that like Islamic art tend to be more traditional people that appreciate keeping patterns that they learned and experienced from their past. It is not to say that they are not innovative personalities, they just do not like to let go of their roots. They like to put new ideas into details and make certain that they will work before sharing them with others. Failure is not something they like to think about because they are more interested in being successful and appreciated for their intelligence. These people can also be or like elaborate things in their life as long as they are tasteful. They tend to prefer geometric patterns and vibrant colors.

Some of the customers at Panera might be getting used to the giddy bunch of women who knit and spin there on Sunday afternoons, but even they must have wondered why one of them abandoned her spinning wheel, kicked off a shoe, and propped up her foot on the back of a chair. They must really have thought "uh oh" when a bespectacled woman with long grey hair bent over said foot, utterly enraptured.

The occasion? I asked if anyone had ever knit the Monkey socks from Knitty. How long did it take for LICraftgal to rip off a shoe and kick up her Monkey-clad foot? Three seconds? Five?

Damn nice sock, I must say! I'll definitely try it.

I was reading Gubbinal's blog this evening. She and I share so many things -- knitting, cats, Tums... She found a site that lets you find out how many people share your name. There are 40 Gubbinals. There are only 32 of me.

Like Gubbinal, I Googled myself... I studied at Sarah Lawrence, I have worked for Lilith magazine, I have donated to the Hillary Clinton campaign (NOT!), I have written about soy gelato, I've done medical research about the results of Chernobyl, I'm an optometrist, I've written about the ordination of gay rabbis, I'm a psychoanalyst ...

I followed the Lilith connection, and discovered that "I" got to read an essay by Cynthia Ozick aloud. (Cynthia Ozick is one of my favorite writers, both for her fiction, and for her essays on everyone from Henry James to Anne Frank. If you haven't read The Puttermesser Papers, do.)

I've always been interested in Lilith, although I never have subscribed. I poked around the website a bit and discovered a blog called Jewesses with Attitude. Is that a fabulous name for a blog, or what? (I have, more than once, been called a "Jewess," and each time, although the term was not meant to be particularly nice, I have been delighted. There's something so transgressive about it that I'm tempted to add it to my non-existent business cards.)

I also discovered a series of essays about friendship under a heading, "Like teabags in a single pot," that included a piece written by Deena Metzger, whose book, Writing for your life, has been on my shelf forever.

I had a lovely day here on earth. We had enough snow to close the library, so I stayed home, listened to Pema Chodron CDs (courtesy of Maven), and knitted a sock that has to be finished, as well as its sister, by next weekend. Now that I have discovered the beauty of knitting on 2 circs, I think I'll be much more productive as a sock-knitter - if for no other reason than I won't be bending to pick up that damn 5th needle that I drop every time I switch to the next DPN!

So, I guess I'm the Jane Austen character who wouldn't have liked the new Persuasion on PBS last night... I didn't. I'm not alone, judging from some of the discussion boards. Had I not already loved the novel, I don't think I would have understood the story at all, and what was with that running around the streets of Bath ... and that very public kiss? No no no no no!
