- What do you use to mark your place while reading? Do you have a definite preference? Do you use bookmarks, paper, or (gasp) turn down the pages? If you use bookmarks, do you have a favourite?
Many friends have given me bookmarks, including hand-made with pressed flowers, or knitted. I use them, and they make me happy. So do the pretty/funny cards, holiday cards, and postcards that arrive in my happy place: the mailbox.
Don't say "dog ear" to me. (Hands over ears: la la la la la)
I do, occasionally, supplement the bookmarks with papers for note-taking, but the papers are usually stored towards the end of the book.
I mostly use bookmarks, either pretty ones people have given me or whatever's at hand (like one of those subscription inserts from magazines, etc.). If the book is mine, I have been known to--yes--turn down the corner. Sorry. But I cannot tell a lie.
I have a couple leather souvenir-type bookmarks I like. One was found at the library, the other is from my college. Kind of obsessive about those two bookmarks...
I'm feeling like such a slob with my scraps of paper!
(I know not good, but leftover from grad school, when I tended to mark the spot and take notes on them, too)
I love bookmarks! Friends have, over the years, brought me bookmarks from their travels, and it's such fun to pull one out and get ready to use it for the book I'm starting.
I haven't got any knitted ones, but I do have some cross-stitched ones.
I really like flat paper bookmarks the best but I do have some beautiful fabric bookmarks.
And remember: never borrow books from me. It will just pain you. :)
Either a conventional plastic bookmark with a nifty tassel (a Dragonology one with a Chinese dragon on it) or a piece of waste yarn from some knitting project or other.
Love bookmarks, I have a couple handmade ones too.
isn't it great when the small things, like a gifted bookmark make you smile each time you see it!!
hmmm....I never realized that I too now consider my mailbox a 'happy space' since I started getting ARC in it and not just unhappy things like bills and such.
My bookmarks must be thin and flat.
Sounds like a joke in there somewhere..
I will use anything I happen to have handy. I also never fold a page, I'll use a receipt from the store or a kleenex first. I have also been known to use a coin or a paper clip. Actually paper clips work really well even if on purpose.
I lose respect for people who dog ear books. If they dog ear a book I loan them, they never get another book from me. Ever.
I have a variety of bookmarks. My favorites are one I wove, one someone knit for me, and a post card of James Joyce that I keep in my much-loved copy of Ulysses. I also will use bibs and bobs of papers and fortunes from fortune cookies.
You some nice friends to make you pretty bookmarks. I use anything that is thin and holds my place, but usually have bookmarks lying around to grab.
Welcome to MM! I hope you enjoy playing.
I am guilty of dog earing.
For the last year I've used a bookmark the MAN gave me on my 49th birthday. It's a postcard photo of Susan Sarandan. Pretty inspiring! I had it laminated.
Dog earring is saved for pages with great sentences or really good paragraphs...I'm currently reading Middlemarch. It has many dog ears.
I have found my books with pages "marked" by all kinds of things - usually receipts of some kind, but I have been know (in the PAST, I assure you) to use 1. my drivers license. 2. a paycheck. 3. my wedding license. (the last in a rather large book on a related subject...
These three were witnessed by family members and it has been very hard to live it down. Especially the paycheck.
