Booking through Thursday

Quick! It’s an emergency! You just got an urgent call about a family emergency and had to rush to the airport with barely time to grab your wallet and your passport. But now, you’re stuck at the airport with nothing to read. What do you do??
And, no, you did NOT have time to grab your bookbag, or the book next to your bed. You were . . . grocery shopping when you got the call and have nothing with you but your wallet and your passport (which you fortuitously brought with you in case they asked for ID in the ethnic food aisle). This is hypothetical, remember….

Wait - I'm hyperventilating - breathe - breathe -

Maybe, just maybe, my MP3 player is in my pocket. (Please?) I have two books loaded right now -
When Things Fall Apart by Pema Chodron, and God Is Not Great by Christopher Hitchens. (Also medieval church music by Anonymous 4, some Vaughan Williams, a few songs by the Bee Gees, and 5D by the Byrds. A motley assortment, no?) That would hold me for even the longest flight.
If I don't have my MP3 player but I have money, I'll search the airport for a sweater and chopsticks. (A sweater and chopsticks???) Think about it. I could unravel the sweater and use the chopsticks to re-knit the yarn into something else. A lap blanket, for example, since the air carriers no longer supply them.
No?
Well, of course I will buy things to read. Magazines, for example. Vanity Fair comes to mind, especially if Hitchens has a piece in it. And Rolling Stone, for Matt Taibi.
And, of course, at least one book. Maybe some nice, thick historical fiction, like Pillars of the Earth (which I have not read yet), or a mystery. (Could I be so lucky as to find some Miss Marples, or a Harriet Vane/Peter Wimsey by Dorothy Sayers?)
And, of course, a pen and some paper, for notes, letters, or journal pages to staple into the real one when I'm allowed to go home.
(And, of course, tea from Starbucks.)

See? I'm pretty low-maintenance.

Ooooh your good. I would of ended up on the plane cursing my rotten luck, bored out of my skull and wondering what totally insane thing my family has done now.

I would beg for the mp3 player because there are always books on there (the better to listen as I knit) and then search the airport for some other reading material. Assuming I had time. I hadn't thought about the chopsticks and sweater, good thought that!

yes, the ipod. mmmmm! that is a good thing.

I love the chopsticks and sweater idea! That would probably keep you busy for a bi. It would be really funny to be sitting next to someone doing that at an airport, that would be entertaining.

great btt!

LOL! This could happen!
Anyway I have my MP3 loaded and ready to go for my trip.
I have Kalahari Typing School for Men and Dorothy Sayers Who's Body.
(and old favorite that one.)
Plus tomorrow is my library day so I am going to search for the sequel to Pillars of The Earth.
Fantastic book that was by the way! Pillars.

I packed 3 small sets of the plastic bryspun dpns and 2 circulars and divided them between my carry on and checked luggage, because I have heard conflicting stories about if you can have small plastic knitting needles on the planes so I figure If worst comes, and they get confiscated then I am only out about 5 to 7 dollars as opposed to the cost of my beloved addi's.
But my father in Law did call me yesterday and told me I could knit with the small flexible plastic ones as long as we are not in high security alert or what not.
I know I can knit on the trains and tour bus so I am making a pair of kilt hose incase one of the men in our group decides to wear a kilt to the Haggis ceremony when we get to the castle in Scotland!
:)

I think you'd have an easier time finding something to do than most of us since you know how to knit! I'm jealous. :-)

What an ingenious response. Just reading the scenario almost induced a panic attack but I started to feel much better as I read through your solution.

Great ideas!

I love picturing you knitting with chopsticks, your yarn trailing from a sweater! :) If worse comes to worst for me in this situation, I can always write stories, observations and notes in the little, nifty, black notebook which I always but always have with me.

Stunningly low maintenance. And pretty quick thinking in an emergency to boot. Good idea, the chopsticks and sweater.

I've got God is not Great on my iPhone! And some Gregorian Chants. I'll have to check out Anonymous 4.

What a scary proposition! I have to have somethign to read, so if there wasn't a book in my car that I could take to the airport, or a bookstore that was open, then I'd be looking for clean, abandoned newspapers to read. Or begging someone for the crossword puzzle. :)

I'd buy any book by Marge Piercey or Sue Miller, a notebook in which to scribble and several large lattes to sustain me
And then I'd get so engrossed and caffeine-crazy I'd probably miss my flight
(Hi, I scampered here by some tortuous route from France, not sure I can find my way back to the mousehole!)
